MAGNUSON, Melvin Orville  1922 – 2019

Melvin Magnuson, formerly of Lomond and Vulcan, passed away peacefully at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary, AB on May 23, 2019 at the age of 97 years.

Mel was born on February 20, 1922 at Lomond, Alberta to Ingvald and Tillie Magnuson. He, along with his siblings, were raised on the farm near Armada, AB. Mel married Edna (Brown) in 1944 and they purchased his Uncle John’s farm next to his father’s farm and they enjoyed raising grain crops and livestock.

Mel had the privilege of being a delegate for the Alberta Wheat Pool for six years. He also belonged to the Lomond Lions Club and did a lot of work with the Charolais and Simmental Associations. Mel and Edna felt blessed to raise their own family of four in the Lomond community.

Mel loved to travel – Canada, U.S., Norway just to name a few places as well as spending winters in Mesa, AZ. Mel and Edna retired to Vulcan in 1986. After Edna’s passing in 1989, he married Enid Christy of Cardston. They enjoyed five years together before her passing. In 1997 he married Angela Slazena. In 2000, he married Hazel Rigo from Taber. They were together for four years where they enjoyed many activities, including travel and dancing. In 2006, Mel married Esther Laninga until her passing in 2012.

Mel sold his house in Vulcan and Mesa that same year and moved to The View in Lethbridge which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Mel is survived by his four children – Sandra (Lou) Beckner-Pizzingrilli of Lethbridge, Marilyn Magnuson of Calgary, Brenda (Barry) Lainof of Calgary, and Ron (Deb) Magnuson of Lomond, ten grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, brother Harold (Norma) Magnuson of Vulcan, former wife Hazel Rigo, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, an infant brother Ingvald Jr, son-in-law Clifford Beckner, beloved wife of 45 years Edna, former wives Enid, Esther, and Angela, and sisters Florence (Ken) Sokvitne and Claire (Tom) Annear.

Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held Friday, May 31, 2019 with Interment in Vulcan Cemetery at 1:00 pm then the service at Vulcan United Church at 3:00 pm, Sue MacDonald, D.M. officiating.

    Condolences to all the Magnuson families. Melvin was always a fine gentleman .Irvin and I always thought he was a good community person and just a real nice guy .
    I’m sorry I won’t be able to attend the service today.

    Melvin was a great friend and neighbour, and did much for The Lomond Community during his years here. He will be missed by so many in Southern Alberta. My sympathy goes out to all members of his extended family. Marvin Maronda

    Sorry to hear of Melvins passing. I remember him well and he was always so nice to me. He will be missed by all.
