HYSLIP, ANNIE SMYTH, BELOVED WIFE OF THE LATE HAZEN HYSLIP OF VULCAN, ALBERTA WAS CALLED HOME TO HER LORD ON FEBRUARY 14, 1992 AT THE AGE OF 87 YEARS.
ANNIE WAS BORN IN NORTHERN IRELAND, COUNTY ANTRIM, ON MAY 11, 1904 AND APPRENTICED THERE AS A SEAMSTRESS UNTIL IMMIGRATING TO CANADA IN 1926, THEN SHE CAME TO BROADVIEW, SASKATCHEWAN WITH HER PARENTS AND SISTER DORIS.
SHE CAME TO THE REID HILL DISTRICT IN 1927 TO VISIT HER AUNT AND UNCLE ROSS MCLEOD WHO FARMED IN THE AREA. SOON AFTER SHE ARRIVED SHE BECAME ACQUAINTED WITH THE B.D. LOCKHART’S WHO OPERATED REID HILL STORE. SHE ACCEPTED AN OFFER FROM THEM TO SELL IN THEIR HOME FOR THEIR FAMILY. SHE TAILORED FOR MANY IN THE AREA. SHE MET HAZEN HYSLIP IN 1927 AND THEY WERE MARRIED JULY 17, 1928 AND THEY CONTINUED TO FARM UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1936. SHE MOVED INTO THE TOWN OF VULCAN AND DEVOTED HER LIFE TO HER TWO CHILDREN.
AFTER HER FAMILY HAD GROWN, AND AMOND HAD TAKEN OVER THE FARMING OPERATION IN 1951, SHE WORKED FOR MANY PALLIATIVE CARE PATIENTS IN THE COUNTY UNTIL RETIRING TO CALGARY IN 1961. SHE MOVED BACK TO VULCAN TO THE PETER DAWSON LODGE IN 1981, THEN TO EXTENDICARE IN 1986 WHERE SHE HAS RESIDED SINCE.
ANNIE HAD AN ALMOST NATURAL ABILITY OF CARING FOR SICK PEOPLE. AFTER TAKING A FEW COURSES, SHE WORKED WITH THE PALLIATIVE CARE UNIT IN THE COMMUNITY AND WITH HER IRISH SENSE OF HUMOR AND HER PRECISE PARTICULAR WAY, SHE GOT ALONG WITH PEOPLE VERY WELL. ANNIE ENJOYED WORKING IN THE BACK GROUND AS A SUPPORT PERSON RATHER THAN UPFRONT IN THE LIMELIGHT.
SHE LOVED HER FAMILY AND CARING FOR PEOPLE, SHE ENJOYED SEWING AND KNITTING. ANNIE WAS A CONSISTENT SUPPORTER OF THE UNITED CHURCH. SEVERAL YEARS AGO SHE DONATED THE BRASS COLLECTION PLATES THAT ARE CURRENTLY BEING USED. SHE WAS A PERSON WHO WOULD NEVER TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ANYONE
OR LEAVE A DEBT UNPAID.
LOVING MOTHER OF A SON AMOND AND HIS WIFE MARY HYSLIP OF VULCAN, BELOVED GRANDMOTHER OF SIX GRANDCHILDREN KELLY MOSCHENROSS OF CRANBROOK, TERRY LYNN(DALE) RIVERS OF RICHMOND, BC., CHRIS FORSYTH OF BLACKIE, LOUIS (PAUL) MCKAY OF CALGARY, LINDA(TERRY) SCHIERMAN, NOEL AND DEB HYSLIP ALL OF VULCAN THIRTEEN GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, A SISTER DORIS VERONELLY OF GRENFELL, SASK.
SHE WAS PREDECEASED BY HER HUSBAND HAZEN IN 1936, A DAUGHTER ELINOR IN 1973, TWO SISTERS AGNES MCALISTER, LIZZIE EVANS AND THREE BROTHERS BILLY, HUGH, AND BERTIE.
FUNERAL SERVICE TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18 ,1992 AT 2:00 P.M. AT VULCAN UNITED CHURCH WITH REV. BEVERLY HILL OFFICIATING. INTERMENT VULCAN CEMETERY.
PALLBEARERS WERE NOEL HYSLIP, TERRY SCHIERMAN, DOUG HYSLIP, DALE RIVERS, KELLY MOSCENROSS AND PAUL MCKAY.
HONORARY BEARERS WERE ANNIE’S GRANDDAUGHTERS, CHRISTINE FORSYTH, LOUISE MCKAY, LINDA SCHIERMAN AND TERRY-LYNN RIVERS.
IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, IF FRIENDS SO DESIRE, DONATIONS TO THE VULCAN UNITED CHURCH WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
