JOHNSTON, Elizabeth “Betty” Nee: Greig  1927 – 2004

Elizabeth Greig “Betty” Johnston, beloved wife of Bob Johnson of Vulcan, Alberta passed away Sunday May 9. 2004 at the Vulcan Extendicare at the age of 76 years.

Betty was born August 6, 1927 in Ottawa, Ontario to John and Jean Barnum. Betty’s father was a civil engineer and worked on project in Southern Ontario and Quebec The family moved with him as he went from one project to another. Betty started school at St. Helen’s Private Girls School in Dunham, Quebec and graduated from Quebec high school. She attended Sir George Williams College in Montreal and took business courses. Betty worked for the Bank of Montreal head office.

Betty met Robert Nelson Johnston in 1951 and they were married on February 2, 1952. In the Fall of 1952 Betty and Bob moved to the Vulcan area to start a new life. She and Bob had five sons and raised them all in Vulcan. Betty attended the University of Calgary and got her teaching certificate. She taught at Hazel Cameron Elementary, worked for the Town of Vulcan and the Peter Dawson Lodge.

Betty was active in the community in many ways. She played the organ for St. Aldhelm’s Anglican Church and was the secretary for 20+ years for the Vulcan & District Historical Society.

Beloved wife of husband Bob, loving mother of five sons John of Lethbridge, Gordon (Linda) of Didsbury, David of Calgary, Hugh of Banff and Duncan (Seona) of Vancouver, seven grandchildren, Arlen (Kristy) of Calgary, Graham of Olds, Logan and Landon both of Didsbury, Alannah, Shanlee and Gordon all of Vancouver, a sister Priscilla (Wallace) Doherty of Brockville, Ontario, a brother Ian (Johanna) Barnum of Ottawa, a sister-in-law Grace (Kelly) McPhail of Kelowna and numerous nieces and nephews.

Betty was predeceased by her parents.

Funeral service Friday, May 14, 2004 at 2:30 p.m. at the St. Aldhelm’s Anglican Church, Vulcan with Rev. Canon Robert Greene officiating.

Casket bearers Arlen Johnston, Graham Johnston, Logan Johnston, Landon Johnston, Dave Johnston, Hugh Johnston and Duncan Johnston.

Cremation.

In lieu of flowers, tributes in Betty’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta, 220, 2323 – 32 Avenue NE, Calgary T2E 6Z3.
