BECK, CARL Davis 1920 – 2005

Carl Davis Beck passed away after a struggle with chronic lung disease on April 7, 2005 at the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 84 years.

Carl was born in Bassano Hospital on April 18, 1920 shortly after his family homesteaded northeast of Duchess. His parents, William and Winnifred, purchased land from the CPR and moved from the mid western United States in search of a better way of life. Carl had two brothers, Donald and Lester. He started school in Wellman and later went to high school in Duchess. In 1937 Carl was off to Tech in Calgary and Louise Fulton arrived to teach school at the Sam Howe School. In this case the farm boy married the school teacher in 1940. They had two children, Fulton and Linda.

In their early years, Carl and Louise farmed and raised Polled Herefords and later experimented with exotic cattle breeds. After achieving success in the cattle business, Carl and Louise moved to Brooks where Carl went into real estate with Wilcox Realty. In later years Carl successfully ran for Town Council in Brooks and was involved in numerous investments including the Heritage Motel and Eldor Place Apartments.

During this period Carl and Louise enjoyed many holidays particularly with their friends. These included numerous cruises and trips to Australia, New Zealand, Europe, the Orient, Southeast Asia, Alaska, the Carribean and Hawaii. In 1997 Carl and Louise purchased the newly built Super 8 Motel in Strathmore and soon moved to Lambert Village to join Fulton and Mary in the motel business. In 2000 Carl moved to Vulcan and within two years the new Petro Canada Service Centre was opened. Since owning his home in Vulcan, Carl spent some time back in Brooks with his many friends living for short periods both in Orchard Park Manor and Newbrook Lodge.

Carl will be remembered by his two children, a son Fulton (Mary) of Vulcan, a daughter Linda (David) Hinkle of Chicago, five grandchildren Sheryl (Scott) Teasel of Guelph, Trevor (Bobbi) Beck of Okotoks, Lisa Norden White of California, Carla (David) Samolej of Chicago and Bill Hinkle of Oklahoma City, ten great grandchildren Philip, Rebecca and Elizabeth Teasell, Spencer and Brandon Beck, Charlie, Chloe and Liam White, Mark and Michael Samolej.
