Continue reading → - JORDAN, CARYL MELVIN (MEL) 1935-2025
Mel Jordan passed away surrounded by his loving family on April 7th, 2025, at the age of 89.
He is now playing hockey on his perfect pond, throwing rocks to that inner circle and on a beautiful back nine – lining up for another hole-in-one; with no worries and a few coins from winning his latest pool game.
Mel was born July 10th, 1935, in Vulcan Alberta to Alice and James Jordan. He was raised on the family farmstead east of Champion with his brothers, Ken, Vernon, Keith, Ron and his sister, Charlotte.
November 1955, Mel left the farm to join the Air Force and during, he trained students from NATO. When he could no longer fly (due to airsickness) he left in October 1957. He returned to Vulcan and worked for Harvey Simmons. In his free time, Mel played ball with the Vulcan Elks and played hockey with the Vulcan Seniors and Wheat Kings.
In 1960, Mel purchased Anglo American, Purity 99 and BA Royalite all of which would become, Mel’s Royalite Service (service station and bulk plant), branded originally as Royalite – then Gulf Oil Servco and later, Petro Canada.
He met Kathern (Kathy) Nolte of Vulcan, married in 1960 and had three children: Randell, Derrick, and Jolene.
For ten years, Mel served on the Vulcan town council and simultaneously, Mel was an active and a vital force, with the Vulcan Kinsmen Club. The Kinsmen Club were responsible for the many parks in Vulcan not to mention the building of both the newer skating and curling rinks. Mel chaired the building committee for the skating rink and then again, for the curling rink. Mel additionally chaired the Vulcan Professional Rodeo for ten years. Held in April (at the Vulcan arena), the event drew large crowds from all over North America, becoming the town entertainment staple for many years.
In 1958, Mel’s curling career started. Mel curled all over Alberta, winning a number of bonspiels. He won the Foothills Bonspiel four years in a row; it has now ceased in operation; however, the Foothills Trophy is now on display in the Curling Hall of Fame, in Calgary. At the same time, he curled for the Vulcan Legion, and he curled for a record 34 provincial championships and won two (2) Dominion Championships, eight (8) Provincial Championships, five (5) second place finishes and ten (10) runners up in the Provincials. Mel finished his curling with a Provincial Master and second place in the Dominion. He loved the game, his teammates and travel. After an illustrious curling career, he sadly had to quit, due to back complications.
At the same time, Mel enjoyed an illustrious golf career; he had six (6) senior championships, one (1) club championship and seven (7) holes-in-one. He was also known to be an avid horse racing fan.
Additionally, on the work front and remembering his early days on the farm, while still owning the garage, he purchased his first section of land west of Vulcan. Later he purchased an apartment building and a carwash – simply, he enjoyed working, keeping busy and all the benefits of being a businessman.
In lieu of his many contributions, the Vulcan Kinsmen Club and the Vulcan Curling Club made him a lifetime member. The Local Legion Branch additionally honored him for his service and being a member for over 60 years. Needless to say, he is proud and grateful for being recognized; but as usual and in keeping with his humble and unassuming way, he has been overheard saying, “I would have done the work regardless of the time or effort involved. I believed in the ventures, had fun and knew they were good for the community.”
When retirement came early, he understandably became bored. Hence, Mel became the manager for Vulcan Gulf Club for eight years. In 1996, he also became the manager of the Vulcan Curling rink and returned as manager to the Petrocan Service Station.
Mel was known as a staunch Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Blue Jays fan. In fact, he vibrated when he knew either team was playing and the only thing better – if anything; was stealing coin from his buddies playing pool.
Mel is survived and will be missed greatly by his children Randell, Derrick (Barb), and Jolene (Rob). By his grandchildren Paulina, Mackenzie (Riley), Jack and Kathryn. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Rita Jordan, Yvonne Jordan, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ed and Sheila Nolte, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins from all over the world. He was predeceased by his wife Kathy, parents Alice and James Jordan, brothers Ken, Vernon (Jean), Keith, Ron (Marj), sister Charlotte (Bob), sister-in-law Madeline Herron and mother-in-law Anna Nolte.
We are so proud that our dad, Mel, will live long in the hearts of not only us but all of you, for he so loved this town.
If anything can be said of Mel, there is one truth for sure – our dad lived the ‘golden rule – do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ He lived and worked hard and knew that when you do – it’s inevitable, life will roll up to meet you and if not – shit happens.
Mel was and will forever be an amazing soul. Love never dies and our love is now under his wings, thus lifting him now – on his next adventure.
We the family, would like to thank his friends, AHS, BLUE CROSS, EMS and the local Fire department, his doctors, the Vulcan Hospital, home and palliative care for their help and assistance – simple but so much appreciated, as it allowed him to be home and to be here in this existence a little longer.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Vulcan Cultural Recreation Centre, 505 Fourth Ave S, Vulcan, Alberta, T0L 2B0, on Saturday April 19th at 1:00 PM. Lunch to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Vulcan Health Care Auxiliary (Palliative Care) email VHCAUX@hotmail.com or Box 299 Vulcan Alberta T0L2B0 in memory of Mel Jordan. - STRUCK, Ernest ‘Ernie’ 1961 – 2025
ERNEST STRUCK
October 19, 1961 – March 9, 2025
It is with great sadness that the family of Ernest (Ernie) Struck shares the news of his sudden passing at the age of 63 on Sunday March 9, 2025 at his home in Carmangay, Alberta.
Ernie will forever be remembered for his humour, quick wit and teasing ways always to his family and friends. Ernie’s stories and adventures throughout his life almost always left you with a smile on your face. Everyone who knew him or spent any time with him has an “Ernie story” that may make you shake your head with disbelief but will always leave you smiling after thinking about the adventure, mishap or death-defying-act he somehow survived through.
Ernie was born in Calgary on October 19, 1961 and grew up in Bowness and from the youngest of ages he loved playing in the dirt with his dinky toy cars and trucks. That is probably why he became such a skilled machine operator. He could dig, drill and scrape dirt with the best of them. Being a multi-talented machine operator on many types of equipment allowed him to work and live in many different parts of Alberta and British Columbia. He worked in his younger years as a train operator and other jobs at Bowness Park while he was going to school, then in BC at a plasir gold mine, fire fighting, forest management fire protection, tree planting, and back in Alberta for many years as directional drilling, then road building and road maintenance. He returned to Calgary from BC to be closer to family and friends, and then met Sandy, Tara and Travis and became the family man. They had their son Cody and after quite a few years moved to the quieter life in the smaller community of Carmangay, Alberta. Ernie loved his family and building for them unique or one-of-a-kind sheds and playhouse, decks, firepits, above ground pools, ponds and renovations to their home.
Ernie also loved tinkering, painting (even with paint rollers) or “renovating” on his cars when he was younger. He loved camping, boating, snowmobiling, motorbiking, water skiing, and fixing up derby cars in his younger years, and then later years hanging out with family and friends, collecting model cars, collecting miniature trains, clocks, loved going to garage sales and more recent years using Market Place online as his retail therapy shopping.
Ernie will be dearly missed by his “Ma” (Jean), son (Cody), Sandy, Big-Sis (Wanda & Andrew), Lil-Sis (Sherry), Chico (his beloved best buddy pup), and many loving family members and countless close friends in Carmangay and Calgary areas. Ernie was predeceased by his Dad (Raymond) in 2020, and his beloved dogs Rusty (Babe), Charlie and Peanut.
There will be a Celebration Of Life for Ernie at the Carmangay Community Centre on Sunday April 6, 2025 at 1:00 PM. If you can make it please bring in writing your best “Ernie Story”. If you cannot attend please email your best “Ernie stories” to wandrusy@yahoo.ca so that we can make a book that we can read and smile thinking about our Ernie and the many memories he made.
Ernie’s family would like to thank the Vulcan Funeral Home and their staff for their compassion and wonderful care at this time.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association- Alberta Division, or any animal rescue shelter in your neighborhood. Ernie loved all animals and they loved him.
Ernie was a large part of each of our lives and we will be missing him so much but he will always be in our hearts and memories!

It is with profound sadness that the family of Ian McLeod Jaquish of Vulcan, Alberta announces his sudden passing at home on January 2, 2025, at the age of 73 years.
Ian was born June 29, 1951, at Calgary, Alberta. He was raised in Calgary and educated at Crescent Heights High School.
Ian’s early years were spent exploring the undeveloped fields of northeast Calgary with friends. He particularly enjoyed spending time camping throughout western Canada with his family. Much of his leisure time was spent playing baseball and hockey where he played on several city and provincial championship teams. He developed an early love of automotives and auto racing. He ventured throughout North America attending major racing events and loved to share his films, experiences and stories with friends.
After high school, Ian’s love of automotives lead him to become a licensed automotive mechanic. He worked at several automotive shops in and around Calgary. His later years saw him move into the field of building construction and maintenance with Sebring Construction.
Ian’s primary hobbies were studying history, particularly World War one and two military history. He was an avid collector of military literature, movies and memorabilia.
Ian is survived by his brothers Barry (Mary Tremayne) and Kevin, and numerous loving cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Roderick and Vera Jaquish, and brother Roderick Hugh Jaquish.

Ervin Nelson (1947-2025)
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather and friend Ervin Nelson. He was the second child to David and Ethel Nelson of Wishart SK and is survived by his loving wife, Colleen, of 56 years and 2 children Ryan(Joy) Nelson of Killarney, MB, Amy(Noel) Flitton of Champion, AB and his grandchildren Dylan, Lexie, Annabelle and Aubrey. He is also survived by his older sister Lavina Dick of Kamloops BC and younger brothers Barry (Linda) Nelson of Regina, SK and Garth (Edith) Nelson of Saskatoon, SK.
As I sit here I am finding it really difficult to sum up a life that was well lived and full. Dad loved adventures and new experiences. He was a handyman in many areas of his life…farming for 40+ years with his dad, driving trucks on the ice roads in Northern BC, driving grader for the municipality, and building pontoon fishing boats.
Dad grew up on the farm outside of Wishart, SK and started his schooling at Larissa’s one room school house until he was in grade 8. There are many stories about riding his horse to school or taking the cutter sleigh in the winter. After attending Wishart school for grade 9 he went away to Weyburn, Sk. for boarding school at Western Christian College and graduated high school in 1965.
Dad loved to drive and his most common sayings were “are we ready to go?” Or “lets go for a drive…”. One time he said that to mom and they ended up in Alaska! When we were young there were many days when we would head out for a drive and they wouldn’t tell us kids where we were going and we would end up 3 hours north at my grandma’s place just for a visit then we would drive home. He was always willing to drive anywhere in Canada to watch his granddaughter Lexie play softball. He and mom drove all the way out to Toronto for the Nationals to watch her.
He made many trips from Saskatchewan to his beloved Texas where he spent 4 years going to university from 1965-1969. And that is where his bucket list started. He decided he wanted to drive in every province in Canada and every state in the US. He almost made it to his goal and only missed Newfoundland and the 2 of the territories in Canada and Rhode Island and New Hampshire in the US. Even after he moved into Extendicare in Vulcan he kept asking to drive to Newfoundland.
Some of dad’s favourite adventures were his mission trips. He and Colleen travelled 3 different times to Guatemala to dig wells for clean drinking water with Living Water International, and he went once on his own to Rwanda. He also went with Ray McMillan and the Canadian Heart Warmers for 6 weeks to India in 2016. Dad’s faith was a pillar for many and his desire to learn more about God and share his faith with people all over the world will forever be an encouragement to all.
Another venture of theirs, that he was so proud of, was building a fishing operation on Big Quill Lake with his cousin Ken and Linda Waite. They spent many hours/days and endless cups of coffee together planning and dreaming until they had their boats floating successfully and for a few years he was a farmer and a commercial fisherman.
In 2021, we noticed dads dementia progressing and he and Colleen moved to Champion AB to be close to Amy. Dad was willing to leave Wynyard/Wishart area that has been his home for 70+ years and experience a new community where he could see the mountains on a regular basis.
We will miss you Dad! Now you know all the things and we will see you again.
