John Louis Engen was born May 19, 1930 in the Vulcan Hospital to Art and Anna Engen and passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 26, 2011 at home.
John was raised on a family farm 15 miles East of Vulcan where he lived and farmed until retiring in 1995, and then moved to Vulcan. He attended Sunnyside School, a one room school house 1 ½ miles North of his home until it closed, and completed his education to Grade 10 at Reid Hill School.
John was an excellent athlete. He played competitive baseball and hockey in the Vulcan area. He was picked up by the Trail Smoke Eaters as a hockey player but not finding a job in the area had to return home to the farm. John loved to fish every chance he had and with his brothers would commercial fish at Lake McGregor every winter for many years. He was a quiet man who loved playing cards, shuffleboard, pool and enjoyed curling. In 2001 he qualified for the Seniors Olympic Games in Lethbridge not winning any events but having a good time. His favourite place other than relaxing at home was the Vulcan Legion. He did not care for alcohol but enjoyed drinking coffee, playing pull tickets and visiting with his friends.
John was married to Cecile Mulhall on August 11, 1973, who he is survived by, as well as; three step-children: Michaeleen Mulhall Smith (David), Raymond Mulhall(Patricia), and Karen Mulhall Weiss; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; sister in-law Jeanne (Pierre) Touchette and Gloria Chartier. John was predeceased by his step-daughter Carol Ann Mulhall Silverman, granddaughter Kassia Rae Weiss, and son in-law Karl G. Weiss, parents Art and Anna Engen; brothers: Gordon, Bill, Leonard, Victor; sisters: Harriet Dietz and Agnes Morseth.
John was laid to rest March 4, 2011 at a private family service at the Vulcan Cemetery. Followed by family and friends who gathered at his home to pay tribute. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Alberta Cancer Foundation 1331-29 Street NW, Calgary, Alberta T2N 4N2.
