WISENER, Verna Virginia   1923 – 2017

Verna Virginia Wisener (nee McGhee) of Calgary passed away peacefully on October 13, 2017 at the age of 94 years.

Verna was born in Drumheller, Alberta and raised on Turtleback Farm in the community of Orkney. Following high school in Drumheller, she attended secretarial school in Calgary. While working for a Calgary law firm she met the love of her life Ira whom she married January 26, 1946. The skills she gained from her farm life upbringing, set the stage for her enduring abilities to ‘make do’ and thrive on 15th Avenue providing a loving and welcoming home to any seeking a roof over their head or food on the table while raising a family of five children. She loved to reminisce about growing up on the farm, riding her horse Old Winnie to school, skiing down the coulee banks and playing piano for community dances.

Verna is survived by daughters, Betty (Ken) Campbell, Pat (Frank) Prystupa, Iris (Wayne) Scribbins, Carol (Steve Eisenberg) Crowfoot and daughter-in-law Patsy Wisener; 9 Grandchildren Rob (Dana) Rapp and Marlene Flood, Katherine (Jeff Boyes) Wisener, Michael Prystupa and Jennifer (Paul) Fisher, Geoffrey and Phillip Scribbins, Thomas and Christine Crowfoot and 2 great grandsons Ryan Flood and Xachary Fisher, 2 sisters Elzaida (Chester) Cunningham, Westlock AB and Lois McGhee of Red Deer AB. Verna was predeceased by her beloved husband Ira in 2000, son John in 2014, parents Harvey Harl and Lucile (Woodward) McGhee, brothers Calvin and Mert McGhee and sister Joan Coad.

Prayers will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 7 pm at St. Mary’s Cathedral (219-18 Ave SW), Calgary, AB, Deacon Dennis Foraie officiating.

Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, October 20, 2017 at 11 am at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Very Reverend Robert Dielissen officiating. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, tributes in Verna’s memory can be made to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, 3100-246 Steward Green SW, Calgary, AB T3H 3C8.

    Thinking of you verna on the 5th anniversary of when we said our final goodbyes. You impacted our lives in ways we could have never expected and your beautiful family welcomed us with open arms at the hardest point in your journey. We will forever love and miss you lovely V! Hope you’re having an incredible time running up and down the coulees again up in heaven.

    Carol, so sorry to hear about your mother. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I have fond memories of being at your house and your mom checking up on us. Her spirit will soar forever.

    Our thoughts and prayers are with the Wisener and McGhee families. We always cherished Verna and Ira’s visits to us in Watervale, PEI. May you find great comfort in the reunion of three beautiful souls, Verna, Ira and John!
