WIERSMA, Simon Gerben “Slick”  1920 – 2014

Wiersma, Simon Gerben “Slick”, of Vulcan, passed away peacefully at the Vulcan Extendicare on August 5, 2014 at the age of 94 years.

Simon was born in Brant, AB on August 1, 1920 to Peter and Kathyrn Wiersma. He was the second born out of seven children. Simon enlisted in the Army for a brief time but did not pass the medical. He worked for many farmers in the area as well as with Nettie and Mildred Ware.

Simon had a passion for animals of all kinds and always had a soft spot for his pets. He also loved music and played the harmonica and fiddle. Simon had many skills, including speaking five languages. He also loved children and drawing and many children in Vulcan County have received his drawings, whether drawn on a piece of paper or on a napkin at the local restaurant. He was a member of the Vulcan Legion for over 60 years and was a long-time member of Vulcan Fish and Game.

Simon was a very gentle and loving man, loved to help others and he will be missed by his friends and family.

Simon is survived by his brother Jim (Paulina) Wiersma of Nanton, sisters Bette Barlow of Williams Lake, BC and Jean Paxton of Coleman, sister-in-law June Wiersma of Redcliff and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Pete and Kate Wiersma, brother Rick Wiersma, sisters Greta (John) Davies and Beulah (Frank) Anderson and brother-in-law Norm Barlow

A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at 2 pm at Vulcan Extendicare, Sue MacDonald, D.M. officiating. Inurnment Vulcan Cemetery Columbarium.

    my name is jacob van dijk in the early 60s he was married to my grandma fenna mulder and became my stepgrandpa opa he was an amazing man doing a stint as the engineer at the banff hospital where my sister and brother and i enjoyed many christmases and other holidays ….im now 56 and he gave me my love for fishing and the outdoors at the age of 6 and working on farms in the vulcan area where i earned my first real pay i loved him with all my heart and there is way to many awesome stories to tell in this small forum…. opa you were an great insperation in my life it saddens me greatly your gone but thrilled to have had you as my opa …Jop jacob van dijk

    Ah Slick, what a wonderful human being. I was in Vulcan only for a few years and was a waitress at the truck stop. He would do his Popeye face for us and always make us laugh. Godspeed I will always remember you with warmth.
