WALD, Paul Anthony 1948 – 2019

It is with great sadness that the family of Paul Anthony Wald of Vulcan, beloved husband of Charlotte, announce his peaceful passing at the Vulcan Community Health Centre on February 22, 2019 at the age of 70 years.

Paul was born on November 23, 1948 in Calgary. Nora then married Dahl Howerton who, along with Nora, raised Paul in the Vulcan area.

Paul attended school in Vulcan and during his high school years played acoustic guitar in a band. Upon graduation he worked on the rigs before finding employment as a parts-man with a local farm implement dealership and went on to work for UFA first in sales and later as manager. Paul met the love of his life, Charlotte, in the New Club Café where he threw her a note on a napkin asking for her name. They were married in 1971 and later bought their first home and had daughter Melissa. They moved into their next home during Charlotte’s 2nd pregnancy in 1973. The birth of their son Preston followed shortly in 1974. By this time, Paul was working for South Country Ford.

After his father Dahl’s stroke, Paul and Charlotte sold their second home and moved to the family farm where he farmed in the evenings and on weekends, in addition to working for Ford during the week. He resigned from Ford in 1997 after he and Charlotte both chose to focus on raising their family and the farm. They welcomed the arrival of their grandchildren – Thomas, Danica, Michaela, Drayton and Reid.

Paul and Charlotte sold the farmland in 2009 . Nora moved to Vulcan and then they moved into town in 2011 to retire. They welcomed Candy, their beloved puppy, into their new town life. In retirement, Paul enjoyed many mornings and evenings on the deck sipping coffee with Charlotte, or having a refreshment around the fire at night while camping. They travelled throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan with their favorite place being Red Lodge and Aspen Crossing also capturing their hearts. Paul also enjoyed spending hours building models with Wally.

Paul enjoyed ice fishing with Preston, restoring old tractors, cooking, enjoyed various work projects with family and friends, coffee and supper groups, poker with the guys even when he lost, old western movies, watches, and participating in Elks functions, especially the Oyster Feeds. Paul was an Elks Member for 47 years and served as Exalted Ruler a number of times over the years.

Paul had a very special relationship with his mother and Aunt Frances, ensuring that everything was right in both their worlds and providing a great deal of support for them. Paul had an incredible sense of humor and an ability to connect with people. He was also incredibly handy and could fix anything!

Besides his loving wife Charlotte, Paul is survived by his children Melissa (Darren) Williams of Strathmore and Preston (Kaillie) Wald of Medicine Hat, Five grandchildren, numerous extended family and a host of friends.

A Family Celebration of Life will be held in Vulcan.

Tributes in Paul’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NWT & Nunavut 207,542-7 St. NW, Calgary T2N 2T9.
