THOMSON, Jean Elizabeth 1928 – 2017

Jean Thomson of Milo, Alberta passed away at the Vulcan Health Centre on March 24, 2017 at the age of 89.

Jean was born in Milo February 11, 1928 to Joe and Mary Thomson. After completing her school education at Milo and Cluny, she chose nursing as her career, trained at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton and achieved her RN in 1951. Her early years as a nurse took her to Winnipeg and Banff, but most of her working life was devoted to British Columbia Public Health. Over the years she was based in various locations including Vernon, Cranbrook, 100 Mile House, Keremeos, Nelson and Invermere and from there traveled to the outlying communities to administer vaccinations and follow the health and progress of babies, children and mothers. Her work done, she returned to Milo where she retired and spent the rest of her life.

Befitting her Scottish heritage and upbringing, Jean was practical, independent, determined and stoic. She was a caring and gentle soul who traveled her own path quietly but was always prepared to lend a hand, whether it be, on her own time, shopping for and delivering sugar free food for a diabetic child in one of the families she cared for, helping at a community gathering, or stirring the gravy, her chosen contribution to preparation of family dinners. She cherished her family and showed it in her own way through deeds, gestures and thoughtful gifts. It was a particular point of pride for her that despite living a considerable distance away, she was able to find time to care for her father and then her mother in their final days and hours.

Jean was predeceased by her father and mother and brothers, Jim and Joe. She is survived by brothers Ian and Rob (Sharon), sister-in-law Bea Thomson and her 12 nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

If desired, donations may be made in Jean’s memory directly to Milo Fire Department, Box 192, Milo, AB T0L 1L0.
