STUMPF, Lorraine 1929 – 2017

Stumpf, Lorraine of Milo, passed away at the Calgary South Health Campus on Sunday, July 30, 2017 at the age of 88 years.

Lorraine was born in the Arrowwood Hospital on February 3, 1929 to John Robert and Annie Goldthorpe, who were English homesteaders in the Eastway district. Lorraine was the youngest of six children and attended Eastway and Buffalo Schools. They milked 14 cows before heading to school by horseback. Mom had a unique style of milking – thumbs turned inward. One of her favorite teachers was Nancy (Holoboff) Kingsmith. They had a typical homesteader’s childhood and she often relayed stories of the “toys” Merv fashioned for them. When playing with Mary and a quarrel arose, it was resolved by humming a particular tune, then they made up and resumed playing. As she grew older, she worked in the fields with Merv and their Dad, tramping hay on the rack, stooking grain and pitching the bundles at harvest, tending to livestock and the garden.

On July 6, 1949, she married Kenneth Stumpf and they began their life together on the homestead in the Buffalo Hills. Never to stray far from their roots, they settled in Milo in the early 50’s. Their first home was purchased from Lloyd Hughes, then sold to Sam Gailey and they purchased the neighboring house from Smokey Jones. In 1965, they built a new home where Mom resided until a decline in her health forced her to move in with Letty Lynn In September of 2016.

In 1968, Lorraine began driving school bus for the County of Vulcan, retiring after 27 years. Her community spirit was shown by her work with the Lutheran Church Women, the Milo Ice Association, Milo Hall Board and her participation in the Terry Fox Runs. She was also a member of the Snake Valley Drop In Centre.

Lorraine also had a great love of animals, especially dogs and horses. She loved the years spent watching her boys play hockey and in the days of the outdoor rink, she could always be relied upon to help shovel snow to clear the ice surface. She liked crocheting, knitting, doing jigsaw puzzles and baking. Her pie pastry so flaky and the Angel Food cakes and cream puffs so tender.

Special memories were made on Sunday picnics, skidoo, Halloween and card parties, and camping trips with family and friends. Without mentioning names, you know who you are!

Lorraine is survived by her son Doug (Teresa) Stumpf of Houston, B.C., daughter Letty Lynn Stumpf and daughter-in-law Rhena Oake, both of Calgary, two grandsons – Ryan (Carrie) and Clark (Candis), four great grandchildren – Reid and Carson, Cassidy and Sophia, all of Houston, B.C., sister Mary Hoffman of Vegreville, brother Mervin (Frances) Goldthorpe of High River and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her in-laws – Estelle Stumpf, Kay Fitzpatrick, Betty Lahd, Elaine Peterson and Charlie Campbell, Elva (Gordon) Gore, Leroy (Heidi) Peterson and Len (Ciska) Peterson. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Kenneth, son Robert “Bob”, sisters Harriet (Len) White, Edith (Archie) Garriock, brother Hirst (Ivy) Goldthorpe and brothers-in-law Martin Hoffman, John Stumpf, Bob Fitzpatrick and Grant Lahd.

Funeral Service will be held Friday, August 18, 2017 at 1:30 pm at the Milo Community Hall, Rev. Gordon Cranch officiating. Family Interment O’ Perfect Peace Cemetery, Milo, AB. Please feel free to dress casual for the service.

In Lieu of flowers, Tributes in Lorraine’s memory can be made to the Milo Fire Department, c/o Box 65, Milo, AB T0L 1L0 or to the charity of your choice.

I first met Lorraine over at Hirst and Ivy’s next door to us in Lomond. I enjoyed her giving Rob a bad time whenever she was around. In later years she always wanted to get caught up on what was going on with Rob and the kids. A hard void to fill….

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your mom and to not have been at the funeral to give you a big hug in person. I have lots of fond memories of riding on the bus (treat day included a kitkat for her) and visits; especially at Christmas time with all of the decorations, homemade treats and slush! Yourself and your mom were always very kind and welcoming to me which is forever appreciated:) Miss you and think of you often, especially during this difficult time.
    Love and hugs,
    Rache

So sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. My Mom and Lorraine were great friends back in the day and I remember coming to Milo on several occasions as a young girl. I will let Mom know this weekend as we did not hear about this sooner … sorry we missed the service. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

So sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. She was boisterous all right, but she was kind. I’ll never forget when she lent her house out to us to gather before Larry’s funeral.
    Our condolences to everyone.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Lorraine. She was a very dear friend and a fun neighbour of my family.Could always count on her Christmas card being the first one to get every year. Had many special conversations on her birthday and Mother’s Day. Have always felt honoured she named her daughter after me. August10/17

Lorraine was not just a lady, but a Great Lady with a kind heart. As a very dedicated school bus driver for the local area, she always not only did what was right, but made sure all the kids on her route had great manners and respect while she was with them in her life. Your mom will be missed greatly.

Thank you for the kind words. Moms kind heart was hidden by a gruff exterior n only those who truly knew her were able to see that. We appreciate your condolences and taking the time to share your thoughts, they are a comfort during a difficult time.
