SCHMIDT, Cleo Arthur 1936 – 2017

Schmidt, Cleo, of Vulcan, beloved husband of Louise, died at the Vulcan Community Health Centre April 16, 2017 at the age of 80 years.

Cleo was born October 26, 1936 in Waterloo ON the 11th child of 14 to William and Caroline. He went to school at Rummelhardt down the road from the family farm. In 1957 Cleo traveled west for the harvest. He hired on with Lawrence Orchard, who farmed east of Vulcan. In 1964 Cleo married Caroline Louise Graham of Vulcan. They were blessed with 2 children and raised them on the Lawrence Orchard farm that they bought and continue living on to this day.

Cleo loved every aspect of farming, from fieldwork to machine maintenance. He always had a project going in the shop and loved to tinker with a machine or build what was needed. He was active in the community; a long term member of the seed cleaning plant, instrumental in a water coop, supporter of Wilderness Ranch Camp, behind the scenes in many of his children’s activities and life member of the Kinsmen Club.

Besides his loving wife, Cleo is survived by his daughters, Carrie (Roland) Schmidt-Bellach, Colleen (Sean) Carey of Vulcan, grandchildren, Lucas, Thomas, Mathias, Sydney and Anna, brothers Wray, Glen and Nyle and sisters Reta, Beatrice, Dorothy and Audrey. He was predeceased by brothers Ralph, Floyd and Ward and sister Doreen.

Cleo’s family would like to thank all the staff at the Vulcan Community Health Centre for their wonderful care and attention. They were amazing throughout his stay there.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at 2:00 pm at the Vulcan United Church, Rev. Gordon Cranch officiating.

Tributes in Cleo’s memory can be made to the Kinsmen Memorial Scholarship fund, mailed c/o Kinsmen Club of Vulcan (Box 248, Vulcan, AB T0L 2B0) or dropped off at Furniture Villa.

Dear Louise and family: I was saddened to learn of your loss. Cleo was a good farmer, a very important part of his community, and an all round real nice man! Always friendly and engaging, his warm smile and cheerful way could brighten any day! I will never forget his generosity and kind offer to loan (and deliver and pick up!!!) one of his threshing machines when Lomond celebrated their Centennial in 2016! He was quite a guy! Because I am currently out of the country I regret I will miss his service but please know that I am thinking of you all! Sincerely .. Marvin Maronda
