SCHALIN, Susan Joyce (Hayes) 1947 – 2012

Schalin, Susan Joyce (Hayes) of Arrowwood, passed away on October 4, 2012 at
the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 64 years.
Susan was born November 7,1947 in Calgary Grace Hospital and is the youngest
of four children born to Stewart and Ella Hayes. She grew up on the family farm east
of Arrowwood. She attended Arrowwood School and then High School in Vulcan.
She continued her education at Olds College taking a secretarial course. Upon
completion she worked at the Calgary Cancer Clinic.
She met Marven Schalin while attending college in Olds and were later married in
Arrowwood on March 18,1967. Together they raised 3 children Kevin, Grant and
Roxane.
Susan was always very involved in many community activities – Boosters, School
Council, Library, Hall, most recently Seniors and the Red Hatter Society (Prairie
Angels) just to name a few. Also once a week she submitted local news for
Arrowwood in the Vulcan Advocate.
Susan was a passionate collector of antiques, music boxes and lately anything with
lady bugs on it. Auction sales were Marven and Susan’s favorite pastime
together, no matter where the auction may be. Susan and Marven got to travel on
some amazing bus tours into the States. Those were cherished days for Susan
as she loved to collect on her travels. Susan was also the local egg lady and would
be seen many mornings at coffee at the restaurant or museum delivering eggs
to many friends and neighbors.
Her battle with breast cancer brought forth an inspiring strong woman that never
complained or dwelled on anything and was always thinking of others first. She will
truly be missed, this Angel of the Prairies.
Susan is survived by her husband Marven, son Kevin (Charlotte) Schalin of
Arrowwood, daughter Roxane (Andy Dixon) Walker of Milo, son Grant (Kim) Schalin
of Gleichen, grandchildren Josh and Karlee Schalin, Jarrett, Rebekah and Dakota
Schalin, Colton Walker and Grace Dixon, sister Carolyn (Duane) Binning of
Strathmore and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her
parents Stewart and Ella Hayes, a brother Ron Hayes and a sister Lois Leadbeater.
