KEHR, Stanley Woodrow “Stan” 1918 – 2014

Kehr,  Stanley Woodrow, passed away October 2, 2014 at Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 95 years.

Stan was born November 18, 1918 at John L. Kehr’s farm near Vulcan. He received his schooling at the Highland school and in Vulcan. He grew up on the farm and started his long career in agriculture with brief breaks to attend basic military training in Red Deer. Stan supplemented his income with odd jobs such as working in construction at the airport during wartime.

Stan and his Dad made additional money hunting coyotes with greyhounds and selling the fur. He was a prairie trapper as well.

On June 22, 1945 he married Frances Cole at her parents in Carseland, Alberta. In 1951 the family moved from Vulcan to the current farm location.

Stan had a mixed farm where he raised various grains, hogs, chickens and a vegetable garden. Grain farming was always closest to his heart. He took great pride in whatever he did. Over time, he remodeled and upgraded the farm house, developed a small orchard, and established a full shelter belt. Over his many years of farming he saw vast technological changes from horse drawn ploughs to GPS guided equipment.

He always participated in community activities such as attending the Vulcan Church of Christ, Odd Fellows Lodge, and the Vulcan Flying Club. He was also a Legion Member and belonged to the Red Cross Community Centre.

Stan enjoyed time spent in recreational activities such as curling, skating, hunting, trail biking, snowmobiling, playing cards and flying with his friends. Although he never held a pilot’s license his sense of direction stood him in good stead. Traveling, camping, fly fishing, and exploring new frontiers were some of his favorite passions.

After retiring from active farming, at age 90, Stan focused his energies on maintaining a park-like yard and a garden of near market quality. Politics and watching hockey kept him interested in the world around him. His family was a source of love and comfort to him.

Stan is survived by his daughter Susan and son Warren (Joan); a brother Max (Betty) Kehr of Vulcan and numerous nieces and nephews. Stan was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Frances Kehr; his parents, Edgar and Jessie Kehr; his sister, Marjorie Geddes, his brother-in-law, Gerry Geddes.

Ron and I want you to know that we were honored to have your dad (Stan) consider us his friend. Stan was a man who possessed many excellent qualities, his love of family, friends, neighbors and his fellow man will forever be with each and everyone of us. His true passion for his land and chosen career of farming was filled with such pride that his eyes sparkled when he spoke to fellow farmers about their chosen craft.

We shared some excellent conversations, meals and visits with your amazing dad.

We are unable to be at his service this week prior to a previous engagement. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We will always cherish our friendship with Stan.
