MARKERT, Margaret Lynne 1952 – 2019

Markert, Margaret Lynne (nee Thompson)

Margaret Lynne Markert, of Vulcan, beloved wife of Murray, peacefully passed away surrounded by her family, at the Vulcan Community Health Centre on February 5, 2019 at the age of 66 years.

Lynne was born July 15, 1952 in Calgary Alberta to parents Florence and Alf Thompson. Along with her siblings, Lynne grew up an acreage on the outside of Calgary Alberta and spent a good portion of her youth at the Thompson farm operated by her two aunts, Marg and Mary Thompson. She graduated from University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science of Home Economics. Following her graduation she travelled across Canada with several friends.

She met Murray at her friend, Ruth Oldfield’s wedding. The following spring, June 26, 1976, Murray and Lynne were married. Together they started on a farming career. They were blessed with 4 children.

She actively pursued her passion for gardening – establishing 2 farmyards, beautiful gardens, and a bountiful harvest every year. She blessed countless people with her skills and passion for sewing. Ranging from wedding dresses to skating outfits to costumes to quilts and everything in between. She loved spending time outdoors and spent many hours walking among the fields and open spaces of the farm. She loved to swim and every summer morning she would beat the lifeguards to the pool and swim her 50 lengths.

Lynne had a gift to serve people with her delicious food. Home cooked meals and family meals were of vital importance to her. She always welcomed any additions to a meal whether it was kids, friends or more family. The grandkids loved her full cookie container.

Lynne will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 42 years, Murray and her children Pam (Bryant) Hurst, Karen (Tim) Earle, Brian (Shari) Markert, and Dave (Naomi) Markert. She will also be fondly remembered by her 12 grandchildren, Owen, Gavin, Declan, Ewan, Connor, Kale, Lexi, Ben, Taylor, Hudson, Inez and Sybil, as well as her siblings Bob Thompson and Gail Sokolan and numerous nieces and nephews..

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 2:30 pm at the Vulcan Cultural Recreation Centre. Refreshments to follow the service.

Tributes in Lynne’s memory can be made to the Vulcan Lions Community Swimming Pool Project, Box 717, Vulcan, AB T0L 2B0 or the Alberta Cancer Foundation 1331-29 St. NW, Calgary, AB T2N 4N2.

Arrangements in care of Vulcan Funeral Home. Telephone 1-403-485-2633. E-mail condolences through www.vulcanfuneralhome.ca.

Dear Murray, and family, Bob and family, and Gail and Jerry,
I expect I am the only one left who knew Lynne all her life. I watched her grow into the wonderful lady we all knew. Of all the fine memories, my favorite is the way she became like a daughter to my sister Mary, her aunt. Mary would never have adjusted to life at Madison Manor as well as she did had she not known Lynne and Murray were near by, ready to support her and help her manage her affairs. Mary loved hearing about the arrival of all the grandchildren and their adventures….like any grandmother. We all remember how Lynne enjoyed life and lived joyously.
Then, after a life of industry and caring, Lynne taught us all how to die with grace. Hallelujah!

Dear Gail, Bob, Murray and family,
As my sister said Lynne was and is the best. Lynne lived live in a way that made so much sense to me. She looked for the best in others and she demonstrated how to be kind. I loved her honesty, her sense of humour and her generous sharing of her time and talents. The lessons she taught about living well will continue in many lives.
    With Love, Jonathan

Words can not express the sadness at this time. I pray each time her smile comes to mind or the memory of a laugh or a giggle or a sunrise on the mountains or a bird at a feeder or a quilt on a bed that you will feel her love for each of you. My condolences to each of you. Hugs…..

Lynne was a beautiful constant in my life since our university years. I’ve been proud to call this wonderful gentle, adventurous woman with her love of the outdoors and her fun loving nature my friend for 48 years. Her ready laugh and indomitable spirit will be in my heart forever, I know too that it is present in her wonderful children and grandchildren which will be of great comfort to you, Murray. My partner, Vaughn of 16 y was fortunate to have known Lynne and Murray too and had an opportunity to work two fall harvests with the family and stayed with the family on the farm. Vaughn says he has never experienced tailgate fall suppers in the field like Lynne prepared for Murray and her boys, and sitting at the table filled with bounty and surrounded by laughter and teasing with grandchildren inevitably sitting on Gram’s knee with cookie in hand. Lynne put love and extra care into everything she touched….whether it was cooking, gardening or sewing. Although gone far too soon, we consider ourselves so privileged to have been able to call her “our friend”. Love you and miss you Lynne!
    Jennifer and Vaughn,

    Dear Murray,
Words fail me. You and Lynne were an integral part of my reunion with my lost Thompson family. I will always be grateful for the acceptance, caring and hospitality you both showed Sherman and me on our trips to Alberta. Lynne will be missed but never forgotten.
