Grant Austin Lahd, born August 7, 1937, passed away peacefully at his home in Milo, Alberta, on February 28, 2017.

Grant is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Betty Lahd and his children Rod (Leslie) Lahd, Lee (Tammy) Lahd, Darla (Vaughan) Hartigan and Kyle (Crystal) Lahd. He is also survived by his grandchildren Paige (Chris) Hartung, Brody Lahd (Courtney Chow), Jesse Lahd, Natasha Lahd, Riley Lahd (Tori Carson), Celia Lahd, Rory Lahd, Julia Hartigan, Daisy Lahd, Ella Hartigan, and Gus Lahd. He is also survived by his sister Jo-Ann (Cameron) Klem and his brother-in-law Keith Healy. Grant was predeceased by his son Jerry Lahd, his sister Marilyn Healy, and parents Jesse and Margaret Lahd.

Grant was born August 7, 1937 in Wetaskiwin to Jesse and Margaret Lahd. He started school in Dawson Creek, BC in 1943, then took Grades 2 and 3 in Midnapore before moving to Queenstown in 1946. He continued school there before finishing Grade 12 in Milo.

In 1956, Grant rented Blackfoot Reserve land and started farming with his dad. Grant married Betty Peterson in 1960 and they lived on this land and in Queenstown before buying the former Wayne Monner farm where they raised their five children. Grant and Betty moved to Milo and Grant continued helping with the farm and cattle up until his passing.

Grant was passionate about farming the family farm. He loved nothing more than having his family together at times like branding and harvest. Grant also loved his annual trips to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Grant was dedicated to his community, and spent many years as a County Councillor.

A Celebration of Grant’s life will be held on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the Milo Community Hall. Interment Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Milo, AB.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations can be made in Grant’s name to the Milo Fire Department, Box 192, Milo, AB T0L 1L0.

  • Grant was the first person that we did work for and became a very good friend. When I first met him at the shop and when I tired to charge him for a part he told me that I should be home in the kitchen I just laughed at him and told him I wasn’t a great cook so he’d have to get use to me being around. He was a great man and became a very good friend. I am so sorry for your loss and will always have a lot of fond memories of him close to my heart
