FODOR, Madeline 1923 – 2015

FODOR, Madeline, passed away peacefully at Vulcan Community Health Centre October 16, 2015 the age of 92 years.

Madeline Gal was born in Arad, Romania January 12, 1923 to George and Magdalena Gal who emigrated to Canada in 1924. Initially arriving in Montreal, the young family moved further west to smaller communities in southern Ontario, finally settling in Rodney on a small farm . Madeline was the eldest of six children. She moved to Windsor, ON as a young woman and worked in domestic duties and then in a dry cleaners business.

She met her future husband, Bill Fodor in Rodney, ON and married him in Edmonton, AB in November, 1952 and started a family in Genesee, AB. Madeline, Bill and baby daughter Esther, moved to Queenstown, AB in 1954 where Bill worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Madeline and Bill raised six children: Esther, Jim, David, Michael, Ruth and Rose.

The Fodor family moved to Vulcan in 1970 and Madeline became involved with community events. She loved books, garage sales and taking photographs. When several local ladies wanted to start a chapter of the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary, Madeline stepped up and became one of the founding charter members.

Madeline continued to be active with her neighbors and the Ladies Auxiliary and then in her later years, after Bill passed away, found new friends and activities with Adult Day Support at the Vulcan Community Health Centre. These connections and participation made a much smoother transition to her residence in the Long Term Care section of the Vulcan Hospital when she could no longer remain in her own home. She was a cheerful participant in outings and parties and especially loved the sing-a-longs and special music. She continued to capture most events with her camera…most likely she is taking selfies with St. Peter right now. Madeline died peacefully with her son David at her bedside October 16, 2015.

Madeline was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Although she will be deeply missed, her memories and legacy as a generous and cheerful woman will continue on in our hearts.

Beloved wife of the late William “Bill” Fodor, loving mother of three sons: Jim (Janine), David and Michael, three daughters: Esther (Chuck) Wong, Ruth (Allan) Brown and Rose Fodor, five grandchildren Danyel (Kim) Fath, Shawn and Madeline Fodor, Chris and Laura Brown and one great-grandson Gavin Fath, two sisters: Irma Lupsor and Julianne Gal, two brothers: Andy (Dorothy) Gal and George Gal and numerous nieces and nephews.

Madeline was predeceased by her mother Magdalena, father George and brother James Gal, as well as her husband Bill Fodor.

Private family service will be held at Vulcan Funeral Home chapel on Friday, October 23, 2015 at11 a.m., public viewing from 12 to 12:30 pm, Interment to follow at Vulcan cemetery.

Hello to all of you. So sorry to have heard that your dear Mom has passed away. What a nice picture. I mostly remember how she looked all those many years ago when you guys made it out to the farm. She had quite a personality and managed her brood so well. 🙂 I know you will miss her a lot. Life doesn’t quite seem the same when your parents are gone, but we manage to get used to it. Our love to you all.

    Hi,
Our sincere condolences to the Fodor family.
I’m so glad that I was able to come out with Aunt Olga for a family wedding (David and Jeans) It was in October 09 or 10 .We came and spent a couple days with Uncle Bill and Aunt Madeline. I helped Esater cook dinner that night and Aunt Olga attended to Uncle Bill’s leg. Easter I don’t know if you remember that Easter but it was a lot of fun.

    books, books, books
every time I visited, I would take home a book, sometimes two. sharing, caring, loving, subtle…. that was Aunt Madeline. One of my best memories is walking at the edge of a wheat field near a Hutterite farm and looking more closely at the grains of wheat. We were curious and wanted to actually see them up close and she was right there with us in her grandma shoes and socks (that’s what I thought of them as I was in sneakers). My memories of her and Uncle Bill are most precious. XOXOXO
